The integration requirement โ what does it mean for you?
2 min read

Read this first. What applies to you is recorded in your own file โ not in this article. This page explains how the system works so you can make sense of what you read there. This is not legal advice.
If you come to live in the Netherlands, you may be inburgeringsplichtig โ required to integrate: to demonstrate within a set period that you can use Dutch and that you know how society works.
Why it differs from person to person
This is where most confusion starts, and it is important enough to state plainly: the rules differ per person and have changed in recent years.
What applies to you depends on:
- your residence permit and the reason for it
- the date you received it
- the pathway set for you
So someone who arrived a year earlier may fall under different rules, with a different deadline and sometimes a different language level. Advice from acquaintances โ however well meant โ is often right for them and wrong for you.
Note also that EU, EEA and Swiss citizens are generally exempt from this requirement, although a language or integration requirement can still apply if they later seek permanent residence or Dutch nationality.
What it usually involves
An integration pathway typically includes:
- language exams โ Reading, Listening, Writing and Speaking
- KNM โ Knowledge of Dutch Society
- components beyond language, aimed at participation and work
Which of these apply to you, and within what period, is in your file.
What to do now, practically
Check your own file. It holds your pathway, your deadline and what you have already passed. Do that early โ not when the deadline is nearly up.
Start with a practice exam. Even while things are unclear, you will immediately know where your Dutch stands. That is useful information whichever pathway applies.
Ask if you are unsure. At the authority itself or through your case contact. Asking takes half an hour; a wrong assumption can cost months.
Do not wait for certainty before you start learning. Whichever pathway applies, learning Dutch always counts. The time between "I am not sure yet" and "now I know" is the cheapest study time you will ever get.
